BLACK FOOTED FERRET

The black footed ferret could also be called the black eyed ferret because of it's noticeable mask that adorns it's face

The Black Footed Ferrets sometimes eats unusual foods such as squirrels, mice, bird eggs, and other rodents

The Black Footed Ferret is basically the size of a mink

Female black footed ferrets have smaller home ranges than males, the home ranges of males may sometimes include home ranges of several females

Black footed ferrets have a long body and a blunt head. The forehead is arched and broad, and the muzzle is small. It has few whiskers and it's ears are triangular.

The black footed ferret was thought to be extinct in the 1970s until a last population was discovered in Meeteetse, Wyoming in 1982

The black footed ferret was once common throughout the great plains from Alberta in Canada to southwestern USA, but by 1987, the speices was extinct in the wild.

In 1987 there were only 18 Black Footed Ferrets left and they were the most endangered species on earth.

Captive breeding was successful and produced enough young ( kits ) that they could be placed into other zoos for breeding and reintroduction back into wild .

300 Black Footed Ferrets live in zoos now and 500 live in the wild.

Once classified as extinct in the wild, the black footed ferret is one of the worlds rarest mammals.

The black footed ferret is a nocturnal animal. They spend the day in prairie dog burrows and wait for them to come back so they can eat them.

Black-footed ferrets spend about 90 percent of their time underground, where they eat, sleep and raise their young.

Kits are born blind and helpless and stay below ground until they are about two months old. At this age, the female begins to take her young on hunting forays and separates the kits into different burrows. By October, the young are completely independent and will disperse to their own territories.
