PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Hold on one second, lets start from the bottom, take a step back!
Cars are crucial as they help us get from point A to B efficiently, and are affordable for many as well
Cars are in demand when it comes to transportation. But it comes with it's costs. Manufacturers must be innovative in order to sell.
Lets check out the different types of cars in the market!
All though these are extreme examples, it goes to show there are many categories of cars.
Reasons
- Requires less fuel, meaning more money!
- Environmentally friendly, using less fossil fuels
- Partially defines your social class (hybrid means hy-prices!)
Key Notes
- Travel Distance of 15,000 Miles
- Ratio of Miles Per Gallon (MPG)
- Ratio Of Cost Per Gallon (3.50:1)
Formula #1
(pun intended)
distance / MPG * Cost Per Gallon
Hybrid
= 15,000 / 50 * $3.50
= 300 * $3.50
= $1050
Sedan
= 15,000 / 40 * $3.50
= 375 * $3.50
= $1313 (rounded)
Si
= 15,000 / 30 * $3.50
= 500 * $3.50
= $1,750
Gas Cost Per Year (lower is better)
We don't have to worry about Civic Si because it costs more than the Sedan and has the worst fuel MPG
In a real life scenario, keep in mind it may cost more because of other additional features
Recall
- Hybrid costs more than Sedan ($6000 more)
- We must find out how many miles can make up for $6000
- Travel 15000 miles per year
Let's begin by finding how much gas one would save per year
$1,313 - $1,050 = $263
So You Save $263 Per Year
263x = 6000
x = 6000 / 263
x = 22.81 years
The Facts
- It will take approx. 23 years to make up for $6000
- 22 years and 295.65 days to be exact (.81 * 365)
- IS THIS WORTH IT?
NO IT'S NOT
- More efficient models will come out over 23 years
- Repairs will cost A LOT
- Gets boring to drive the same car over and over
Similar Concept as #2
- Gas savings must make up for $6,000
- This time 2 variables, 1 for miles traveled, 1 for cost per gallon
Lets Break It Down
- (m/40 * c) - (m/50 * c)
- (24,000 - 18,000) / 10
- The conditional "equal to or greater than (>=)"
If m = miles
c = cost per gallon
40 = non-hybrid MPG
50 = hybrid MPG
What does (m/40 * c) - (m/50 * c) do?
If 24,000 = hybrid MSRP
18,000 = non-hybrid MSRP
10 = years owning car
What does
(24,000 - 18,000) / 10 do?
Lets put it all together!
(m/40*c) - (m/50*c)
>=
(24,000 - 18,000) / 10
To find out how much you may save or lost, you must subtract both parts of the formula and multiply by 10.
WHY? Because she wasn't getting the MPG rate promised, and wasn't actually saving as much money as Honda certified.
Annual Gas Price =
Miles / MPG * Cost Per Gallon
Look Familiar?
20,000 / 50 * $3.16
= 400 * $3.16
= $1264 Every Year On Gas!
Total Gas Cost =
(2011 - 2006) * Annual Gas Cost
(2011 - 2006) * Annual Gas Cost
= 6 * $1264
= $7584 Total On Gas!
Annual Gas Price =
Miles / MPG * Cost Per Gallon
Deja Vu isn't it?
20,000 / 42 * $3.16
= 476.2 * $3.16
= $1504.8 Every Year On Gas!
After System Upgrades
20,000 / 30 * $3.16
= 666.7 * $3.16
= $2106.8 Every Year On Gas!
1504.8 * 4 + 2106.8 * 2 =
6019.2 + 4213.6 = $10232.8 in gas over 6 years!
Money On Gas Over 6 Years
If we were the judge, we would award Heather Peters $6000 because she had to spend $2648.8 extra than if the rate actually was 50 miles per gallon. Since it was clearly the company’s fault that she had to pay extra money for no reason, to make up for that we would give her a few thousand extra for going through all the trouble for 6 years. So basically her wasted money would be paid back and she would get a couple extra bucks.
