Oil Wells

Oil is usually used for transportation or home heating appliances, although a smaller percentage is used as a fuel for electricity generating plants.

Crude oil is removed from the ground by drilling deep wells and driving it up to the surface.

Oil refining produces water waste and other solid waste that have high levels of metals and toxic compounds and that may require special treatment, and disposal. Also, when oil is burned at power plants, remains that are not completely burned can accumulate, forming another source of solid waste that must be disposed.

When power plants that remove water from a lake or river, fish and other aquatic life can be killed, which affects those animals and people who depend on these resources.

Drilling can also cause underground water to become contaminated with oil, can also affect surface waters. During the transportation of oil, spills can occur, damaging water quality and destroying different environments.

The construction of large power plants can destroy habitats for animals and plants. Waste products can cause land contamination if not disposed correctly. Also, when oil spills occur on land, soils are ruined.

The extraction of oil and its usage in power plants is one of the causes of global warming. Obviously, if this method of generating electricity it is still used it will continue harming our planet as it will still generate effect on global warming.

Energy from Natural Gas

Natural gas is a fossil fuel created when layers of crushed plants and animals are exposed to powerful heat and pressure over thousands of years.

Natural gas is a nonrenewable resource because it cannot be replaced on a human time frame.

The negative effects of natural gas are very similar to the ones of oil. For example, when power plants remove water from a lake or river, fish and other aquatic life can be killed, affecting animals and people who depend on these resources.

The extraction of natural gas and the construction of natural gas power plants can destroy natural habitat for animals and plants. In addition, it impacts land resources by generating erosion, loss of soil efficiency, and landslides.

The use of natural gas to create electricity does not produce substantial amounts of solid waste.

As in the usage of oil, natural gas also is a cause of global warming. its usage contributes to this worldwide problem that keeps giving global warming a bigger effect on earth.

Coal's Impact

Coal is a fossil fuel formed from the breakdown of organic materials that have been exposed to geologic heat and pressure over millions of years.

Large amounts of water are needed to remove contaminations from coal at the mine. In addition, power plants use huge quantities of water for producing steam and for cooling. When power plants remove water from a lake or river, fish and other aquatic life can be affected, as well as animals and people who depend on these resources.

The burning of coal creates ash, which is composed mainly of metal oxides and alkali. On average, the ash in coal is 10 percent. Solid waste is also created at coal mines when coal is cleaned and at power plants when air pollutants are removed from the gas. A lot of this waste is left in landfills and abandoned mines, though some amounts are now being recycled into handy products, such as cement and building materials.

Soil at power plant can become contaminated with countless pollutants from the coal and take a long time to recover, even after the power plant closes down. Coal mining and processing also have environmental impacts on land.

Coal is also one of the main causes of global warming. its usage and extraction deeply affects our environment and it is also one of the main contributors of global warming.

How do we Waste Energy

Miami Night Skyline

Leaving lights, tv's, appliances on when not in the room or asleep.

Little cracks around doors that let out heat.

"Always on" appliances

Water heater set so high you need to cool it down before using the shower/sink.

Incandescent lights when compact fluorescents will work.

Run the dishwasher or clothes washing machine when partly empty.
