"Hell" is an excerpt from "A portrait of an artist as a young man"

In the book, a description of hell is used by a preacher in order to scar the protagonist.

In The piece ,The preacher describes the horrific setting of hell in graphic detail.

Despite the religious subject matter, James Was against the catholic church and struggled with faith throughout his life.

When the arrangements for Joyce's burial were being made, a Catholic priest offered a religious service, which Joyce's wife Nora declined, saying: "I couldn't do that to him."
