MY SEVERE WEATHER IS HURRICANES

  • Hurricane season lasts from June1- November 30th but they are more common during the fall months
  • It occurs in warm ocean water gaining speed as it goes.
  • Hurricanes don't occur in Wisconsin because we are not near a big enough body of water.

EFFECTS OF HURRICANES

  • People are effected by hurricanes many lose homes and property due to flooding
  • Animals are effected there habitats can be destroyed and they in most cases are forced to move.
  • The environment is effected with rising waters causes flooding damaging soils and trees they can knock trees down.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE PREPARED

  • Its important to be prepared to save your life and limit damaged property as much as possible.
  • It is important to have at least a 3 day supply of food and water.
  • If a hurricane is coming it is crucial to be near a closet or sturdy room without windows.
  • Make sure to board up all windows to protect from broken glass.
  • Make sure to put valuables in a high area in case of flooding.

FACTS ABOUT HURRICANES

  • The eye of the storm is usually the calmest place in the storm.
  • A large hurricane can release as much energy as 10 atomic bombs.
  • The first flight into a hurricane happened in 1943.
  • Hurricanes are the only disater to be given their own names.
  • Jupiter has a hurricane that has been going on for 300 years and that hurricane is the size of the earth.
