PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Cell Project: B-Lymphocyte
Nick Orman Jake Nichols Austin-Michal Bowman

What is the general shape of the cell?

  • A type of white blood cell
  • Spherical shape with protruding b cell receptors attached.

What is the function of the cell?

  • Important component of regular immune response
  • Responsible for the maintenance of cellular and humoral protective memory
  • Provide a link between innate and adaptive immunity
  • Many mature into what are called plasma cells that produce antibodies necessary to fight off infections

How is the shape related to its function?

  • The structure of the B cell is related to its function because of its receptors on the surface.
  • Receptors on the smooth surface bind intact antigens.

How is communication accomplished?

  • They communicate by secreting increased levels of a special protein molecule called cytokines that act on other cells.
  • Examples of cytokines are interleukins, interferons, tumor necrosis factors, and colony-stimulating factors.

Special features/Organelles? Function?

  • Organelles: Have all organelles normal cells have.
  • The cytoskeleton is very important as it aids in cellular movement and allow cell shape to change.
  • Vesicles and vacuoles also help the B cell in protecting the body from outside harm.

Which body system ?

  • The B lymphocyte is in the Immunitary system. They secrete a substance called antibodies into the bodily fluids. which help the immune system fight off foreign antigens
  • These antibodies help the immune system fight off foreign antigens which helps keep the bodies health in tact.

Diseases specific to this system

  • Type 1 Diabetes: attacks the cells in the pancreas which slows down the function of the B cells.
  • HIV: caused AIDS, acquired viral infection that destroys white blood cells and weakens the immune system
  • Asthma: Can be triggered by a common allergen. Lung response causes coughing, wheezing, and trouble breathing.
