THREE BRANCHES OF GOVERMENT

EXECUTIVE BRANCH



The head of the Executive Branch is the president.

The president serves for 4 years. He/She can be re-elected for a 2nd term. The president can only be elected to office twice.

The president makes sure that laws are enforced and obeyed.

The president preserves, protects and defends the Consitution.

The president makes sure that the goverment runs smoothly.

Executive Branch Fun Fact :
President Gerald Ford worked washing dishes in a restaurant kitchen to make ends meet.

LEGISLATIVE BRANCH

Congress is divided into two parts, Senate and House of Representatives.

Senators serve for a 6 year term.

Representatives serve for a 2 year term.

One duty of Congress is to pass laws.

Another duty is to approve or reject treaties and presidential inauguration. Only the Senate can do this though.

If the president vetoes a bill,Congress has to choose to either override it or go along with what the president says.

Legislative Branch Fun Fact :
Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher whose salary has been paid by a taxpayer since 1777.

JUDICIAL BRANCH

The justices are the people who serve on the Supreme Court.

Justices serve until they die or they retire.

One duty of the Supreme Court is to explain and interpret laws.

Another duty is to judge whether federal, state, and local governments are acting within law.

They also judge whether the presidents actions are unconstitutional.

Judicial Branch Fun Fact :
The first woman to be named to the Supreme Court was Sandra Day O'connor. She was appointed in 1981.

It is important to know how the goverment works in order to have a better understanding of our rights.
