THE OWL ITSELF

  • Owls have claws called talons
  • Owls have feathers down their legs to stop caught animals from attempting to claw them.
  • Have large eyes for sight.
  • Eyes are fixed in head. To compensate, the owl can swivel it's head up to 270°

THE OWLET

  • Owls do not lay all eggs at once so they do not have to all be fed at once.
  • Can swallow prey whole at 9 weeks.
  • Baby owls must leave the nest when they fly confidently because all the food in that area has been depleted.

HUNTING

  • Eyes of owl cannot move, but head can rotate up to 270°.
  • An owl hears in 3-dimensions. This is because of an internal ear structure and both ears being at different elevations.
  • Owls usually feed on small rodents, but some feed on bugs and other birds. The barn owl eats rodents.
  • Because of the fluffy feathers of the owl, when the owl is in flight it is nearly soundless.
  • Owls are nocturnal; they hunt at night
  • All these help the owls be experts and hunting.

COOL oWL FACTS

  • Owl's eyes do not have cones, therefore they are colorblind
  • The stomach of owls cannot digest fur, feathers or bones of their prey. They are regurgitated as owl pellets.
  • Barn owls live up to 20 years, but few do because of food shortages.
