Follow The Rules

I could

Rewrite the Rules

Or... I could

If I followed her rules she would win

If I followed her rules I would have done poorly in the class. It was a humanities class and many subjects were in contrast to my personal beliefs.

If I rewrote the rules I would win

I needed to maintain my identity and pass the class.

I won

I wrote my own set of rules for the class.
1) I was honest
2) I would not compromise my beliefs and identity
3) I would write well
4) I would be interesting
5) I would push the limits just enough

If you learned it at a conference so did everyone else

I work with people all the time that go to the same conferences as their competitors. They all bring back the same set of instructions and handouts then they all implement the same marketing techniques.

When everyone does the same thing everyone is less effective

Peoples minds don't register things they see constantly.
One theory is that Disney has a trash cans within 30 feet of any spot so that you don't remember the trash cans. It also makes it easier to keep the park clean.

Identical Sounds

Can cancel each other out
The technical explanation is that sound waves that are 180 degrees apart cancel each other out. This is how noise canceling headphones work. The generate opposing sound waves so you don't hear the noise.
Is your marketing canceling being canceled out? If you just learned it at a conference it probably is.

Twitter

is full of identical tweets and most get ignored
I hardly ever read Twitter. My news feed has too few original items. I only need to read the same local news stories once and not that much happens in the sports world.

If everyone uses the same template
Everyone gets the same result

The top news story on each of the local channels is always the same. In Indiana it is usually the weather will be bad.

Rewrite the rules

Don't do what everyone else does
Break from the rules, don't rehash what has been done. Make a new path, ben the mold, stand out.

  • Be Smart
  • Be Creative
  • Be Different
1) Be Smart about what you do. Don't push the limits too far don't want to offend someone.
2) Be Creative. Do something unique and new
3) Be Different. If everyone else is doing it don't.
