No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Why college?

5.8% of Huntington Park residents age 25 or older possess a college degree

What are some reasons why these numbers are so low?

College seems unrealistic to:

  • low achievers
  • middle-to low-income levels
  • underrepresented minorities
  • disabled youth
  • families where no one has attended college before

College planning obstacles:

  • Social/language barriers
  • Less access to information and guidance
  • Less exploration, low expectations
  • Decreased access to the internet
  • Underestimation of the amount of financial help available.

Why create these changes?

Financial Advantage

  • In the 1980's, you made 64% more than someone without a degree
  • In 1998, you made 85% more
  • In 2008, you made 89% more
  • In 2013, you made 98% more

$10 per hour multiplied by 98% =
$19.80 per hour

As a college graduate you are 50% less likely to be unemployed

What advantages do we possess if we have financial wealth?

Beyond the finances..

  • Live healthier, longer lives
  • Provide security for our families
  • Live in safer communities, uplift our communities, influence next generations to go to college
  • Contribute to Latino professionals working in our communities
  • Make more informed financial decisions

A college degree is about negative $500,000

Those who question the value of college tend to be those with the luxury of knowing their own children will be able to attend it.
