DERIVATION

  • PROPIONI- propioni acid; naturally accruing carboxylic acid
  • Bacterium- bacteria;a member of a large group of unicellular micro-organisms
  • Acens- skin comdiotion, caused by a clog pore

CELL INFO

  • Cell shape: can be rod-shaped or branched
  • Gram: postive
  • Locomotion: non-motile

Metabolism:
-They eat sebum; Sebum is a naturally occuring substance that is produced by the sebaceous glands, which are found in the skin and mucus membranes of mammals.

Cell Facts:
-Is it important to biotechnology: had been studied because if it's ability to stimulate the reticuloendothelial system(class of cells that are apart of the body's defense system)
-Is it used in humans by some way: in the eighties Propionibacterium acnes was used to stimulate the immune response against cancer in human cells (tested on mice cells first)
-Role: helps maintain the skin healthy
