Sam Houston became president of Texas on September 1836. Nearly a month later he met with Texas Congress at Columbia in Brazoria County to organize a new government. Houston then made Stephen F. Austin Secretary of State, but he served for only a few weeks. Austin died later on December 27, 1836 of pneumonia at the age of 47. Houston then announced that "the father of Texas is no more."
