CAPSULE SUMMARY
- "Conscience of the Court" retells a series of events involving
- Laura Lee Kimble, an African American maid, and her employer,
- Mrs. Celestine Beaufont Clairborne. Both characters are accused
- by the same man, Clement Beasley; Clairborne is accused for not making
- good on a loan and Kimble is accused of beating Beasley, yet Clairborne
CAPSULE SUMMARY CONTINUED
- never makes an appearance in the story because she has left town.
- Kimble and Beasley recount their versions
- of events and eventually, as the story unfolds, it is revealed that
- Beasley lied about the due date of the loan and the charges against
- Kimble are dropped.
ENDING/REASONING
- I like how the story left off because
- everyone got what they deserved in
- the end. Kimble, although she never heard
- from Mrs. Clairborne, was not sent to jail
- for a crime she didn't commit.
ENDING/REASONING CONTINUED
- Beasley was shown for who he truly was,
- a liar and a thief. It was a just finish to
- a moral story, the moral being the truth
- will always come out in the end.
