• Mountains cover about 80% of Haiti
• Surrounded by Atlantic and Caribbean
• The major city is Port-au-Prince

POPULATION

• Most colonists were slaves
• French brought Africans to be slaves
• French needed slaves after killed previous slaves (natives)

ECONOMY

• Entirely agricultural
• They have coffee and spice plantations
• Also beans, corn, mangoes, rice, sugarcane, yams

• Gold
• Silver

INTERESTING FACTS

• Columbus landed on present day Haiti/Dominican Republic in 1492
• He named it Hispaniola
• Haiti's official name in French is Republique D' Haiti
• By 1788 there were 8 times as many slaves as colonists
