He escapes the ghetto trying to find shelter and food which he does
A German officer finds Szpilman and allowed him to hide and brought him food regularly
Szpilman was later freed while the German officer was captured and Szpilman kept playing the piano

and anyway the weather makes them think nothing is likely to be imminent
