GALAXIES

BY: KAITLYN MAKENS

100 billion galaxies make up the universe. Galaxies are only born every few hundred years. They are made up of dust, gas, and 6 trillion stars. Galaxies also produce stars.

Most of the brightest galaxies in the universe have spiral shapes but irregular galaxies do not a have certain shape. Some astronomers think that gravity from nearby galaxies cause the irregular galaxies to form.

Elliptical galaxies are brightest in the center. About 60 percent of all galaxies in the universe are elliptical. Galaxies do not stand still, they are always moving around. They sometimes collide and crash into each other.

The nearest galaxy is the Andromeda Galaxy. It would take 2.9 million light years and 5,880,000,000,000 miles to get to the Andromeda Galaxy. The
biggest galaxy is the Astropixie. It is five times bigger than the Milky Way. It has been living for 1 billion years.
