PLANT CELL VOCABULARY

Cell- Membrane covered structures that contain all of the materials necessary for life. All living things are made of cells.

Cell Membrane- Thin, semi-permeable layer that controls what goes in and out of the cell.

Cell Wall- Only located in plant cells, give the plant structure.

Chloroplasts- An organelle found in plant cells in which photosynthesis occurs.

Cytoplasm- The jelly-like inner part of the cell that suspends the organelles.

Nucleus- Usually the largest organelle in the cell, contains the DNA material. Also known as the "brain" of the cell.

Organelle- Specialized structure within a cell that performs a specific function that enables the cell to live and reproduce.

Vacuole- Site of water storage in a plant cell.

THE CELL THEORY

  • All organisms are composed of one or more cells
  • The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in a cell
  • All cells come from preexisting cells
