WHAT IS ANOINTING OF THE SICK?

  • Helps us to use our illness in service of Christ
  • Given during sickness or immediately before death
  • Gives the patient strength to overcome their sickness, or suffering
  • Heals them both spiritually and physically

THE DOCTOR

  • Patient has a problem; sickness or injury
  • Doctor discovers that source of pain
  • Provides a medicine to heal patient
  • Provides the specifics
  • Comforts the patient on his/her condition

ANOINTING AND THE DOCTOR

  • Matter: Oil of the Sick, the medicine
  • Form: "May The Lord who frees you from sin save you, and raise you up"
  • Form: "Take this medicine once a day, and you will feel better"
  • Celebration: both for those who are suffering, or death
  • Communion: we are united in the ministry of serving others

ROQIA TRADITION

  • Islamic healing tradition
  • Qur'an verses are read to the patient
  • Believe that Mohammed practiced this tradition
  • Most people expect physical healing

  • Communion: united with Mohammed and Christ

  • Transformation: changes view of those suffering
  • They are participating in saving works of Christ
  • Anointing of Sick heals both physically and spiritually
