  • Fishing, hunting, and gathering wild plants
  • Raised corn and other crops

ADENA AND HOPEWELL

  • Where: Appalachian Mountains
  • Known as Earthworkers
  • Builders, skilled Artisans
  • Collected Conch Shells, Grizzly Bear Teeth, Obsidian and Copper

INUIT

  • Lived in the Arctic
  • Also known as Eskimos
  • Lived by hunting and fishing
  • Seals and other small sea mammals provided them with the proper tools to survive.
  • Transported goods using Kayaks and Dog Sleds

NORTHWEST COASTALS

  • Modern day Washington/Oregon
  • Caught Salmon, as well as other fish, and hunted small mammals
  • Hunters also tracked Deer, Wolves, and Bears
  • There was plenty of resources and villages were built
  • Participated in trade

IROQUOIS

  • Modern day Maine
  • Built villages
  • Women farmed while men fought in battles against other villages
  • Started development of a political system.

OLMEC

  • Tropical forests along Gulf of Mexico
  • Preists and Nobles at top of society
  • Classy people lived in inner city, farmers lived on borders of city

MAYA

  • El Mirador in Guatemala
  • Influenced by the Olmecs
  • Developed two separate farming methods
  • First to use fire as agricultural tool.
  • Built raised fields to protect crops from floods

CHAVIN

  • Andean region, survived for 2000 years
  • Had a unified culture and religion

MOCHE

  • Peru
  • Developed irrigation and fertilizers
  • Built roads and organized mail system

NAZCA

  • Southern Peru
  • Carved in rock
  • Major city of Huari
