WHAT ARE HURRICANES?

  • It is a low pressure system with strong winds
  • Winds can blow at 74 mi/h
  • Called cyclones or typhoons depending on where they form

HOW DO THEY FORM?

  • They need warm water to form
  • They begin as a group of thunderstorms
  • The water turns the thunderstorm's energy into a storm
  • The winds form a spiral around the low pressure center
  • It grows bigger and more powerful over the water

WHAT CAN HURRICANES DO?

  • Strong winds can cause huge waves
  • Winds can throw objects around
  • A storm surge can cause huge damage
  • Rain can overflow rivers and lakes
  • Can last for hours or days

  • Names are repeated alphabetically
  • Deadly hurricane names are never repeated again
  • The eye can be very dangerous
