Orion's first flight will be atop Delta IV Heavy rocket, currently the world's most powerful luncher. The payload includes not only the Orion crew capsule, but all it supporting components, in particular the service module, which propels the capsule before the return to Earth.

Orion's primary objective is to transport a group of astronauts into space to continue the expedition and exploration of life on Mars.

Orion was expected to orbit Earth twice and make a safe decent into the Pacific Ocean where the Module would be retrieved by USS Anchorage.
