Classical Conditioning

  • Created by Pavlov
  • There is a natural sequence of events (an unconscious, uncontrolled and unlearned relationship
  • ex: dog sees food--> salivates

Classical Conditioning Dog example

  • Start with 2 things that are already connected to each other, then add in a third multiple times
  • The 3rd source will eventually have the power to create the same behavior

Classical Conditioning dog example

  • When you add in the bell ringing as a stimulus for the food, the dog then reacts very similarly to how he reacted when it was just the food.
  • dog hears bell-->salivates (no food)

Main categories

  • uncontrolled stimulus
  • uncontrolled repsonse
  • uncontrolled relationship
  • controlled stimulus
  • controlled response

Unconditioned Stimulus

  • Something that already evokes a response

Unconditioned Response

  • Unconditioned simply means that the stimulus and the response are naturally connected.
  • This means that the condition was already connected before anything every started.
  • a thing that is already evoked by a stimulus.

Unconditioned Relationship

  • an existing stimulus-response connection

Conitioning Stimulus

  • a new stimulus we deliver the same time we give the old stimulus.

Conditioned REsponse

  • the new stimulus-response relationship we created by associating a new stimulus with an old response.

Lastly, Before we Go

  • First, we start with an existing relationship, Unconditioned Stimulus to an Unconditioned Response. Second, we pair a new thing (Conditioning Stimulus) with the existing relationship, until the new thing has the power to elicit the old response.
  • Classical conditioning is built on creating relationships by association over trials
