ACQUIESCE

  • (verb) to accept without protest; to agree or submit
  • SYN: comply with, accede, consent, yield
  • ANT: resist, protest
  • It takes a knowing man to be able to acquiesce what his wife wants.

ALLURE

  • (verb) to entice, tempt; to be attracted to
  • (noun) a strong attraction; the power to attract, charm
  • SYN: (v.) beguile, tantalize; (n.) temptation, enticement
  • ANT: (v.) repel, turn off; (n.) repellent
  • Women tend to allure men into loving them.

ASKEW

  • (adj., adv.) twisted to one side, crooked; disapprovingly
  • SYN: awry, lopsided, cockeyed
  • AYN: straight, symmetrical
  • There is a sort of art to graffiti, people draw in askew patterns.

BLITHE

  • (adj.) cheerful, lighthearted; casual, unconcerned
  • SYN: carefree, nonchalant, indifferent
  • ANT: glum, morose, despondent, depressed
  • Young blithe children ran all around the house not caring about what they were doing.

CONTENTIOUS

  • (adj.) quarrelsome, inclined to argue
  • SYN: argumentative, disputatious, combative
  • ANT: agreeable, amicable, affable, pacific
  • Two parties arguing against each other tend to be contentious.

COVET

  • (v.) to desire something belonging to another
  • SYN: crave, yearn for, hunger for
  • ANT: distain, scorn, despise
  • Jimmy's basketball shoes are exuberant, so Chris was wanting to covet them.

CRESTFALLEN

  • (adj.) discouraged, dejected, downcast
  • SYN: despondent, disconsolate
  • ANT: elated, cheerful, self-satisfied
  • After loosing the game Tim came out the locker room with a crestfallen face.

DISHEVELED

  • (adj.) rumpled, mussed; hanging in disorder
  • SYN: untidy, disarranged, tousled
  • ANT: tidy, well-groomed
  • My mom often tells me my room is disheveled.

EXPONENT

  • (n.) one who advocates, speaks for, explains, or interprets
  • (math) the power to which a number, symbol, or expression is to be raised
  • SYN: defender, champoin, interpreter
  • AYN: critic, adversary, faultfinder, detractor
  • Exponent is an American engineering and scientific consulting firm that provides solutions to complex technical problems.

GARRULOUS

  • (adj.) given to much talking, tediously chatty
  • SYN: talkative, loquacious
  • ANT: reticent, mum, taciturn, laconic
  • Women tend to be garrulous and never stop chatting no matter how hard you try.

INSUPERABLE

  • (adj.) incapable of being overcome
  • SYN: invincible, insurmountable
  • ANT: surmountable, conquerable
  • Superman is insuperable, he can not be killed or harmed.

LAMENTABLE

  • (adj.) to be regretted or pitied
  • SYN: deplorable, regrettable, disstressing
  • ANT: praiseworthy, commendable, laudable
  • Villains are lamentable, they are not praise worthy.

MISNOMER

  • (n.) an unsuitable or misleading name
  • SYN: misnaming, malapropism
  • Saying that a movie is the best in the world is a misnomer because i have heard a many movies say that.

PROFESS

  • (v.) to affirm openly; to state belief in; to claim, pretend
  • SYN: assert, proclaim, purport
  • ANT: disclaim, disavow, repudiate
  • I profess my faith in Christianity by telling people the word of God.

RESPITE

  • (n.) a period of relief or rest
  • SYN: interval, intermission, lull, breather
  • In football and basketball there are four quarters, and half way through there is a respite called halftime.

RETRIBUTION

  • (n.) a repayment; a deserved punishment
  • SYN: recompense, requital, just deserts
  • Criminals need to pay for what they have done, justice demands retribution!

SINUOUS

  • (adj.) winding, having many curves; lithe and flexible
  • SYN: twisting, convoluted, supple
  • ANT: direct, unbending, stiff, rigid
  • Sinuous roads tend to have many curves.

SONOROUS

  • (adj.) full, deep, or rich in sound; impressive in style
  • SYN: resonant, resounding, grandiloquent
  • ANT: tinny, reedy, harsh, grating
  • Saxophones have a rich sound, they are sonorous.

VANGUARD

  • (n.) the foremost part of an army; the leading position in any field
  • SYN: forefront, cutting edge, trailblazzers
  • ANT: rear guard, stragglers, laggards
  • The vanguard of the army led his country from the front of the army.

WASTREL

  • (n.) a wasteful person, spendthrift; a good-for-nothing
  • SYN: loafer, idler, profligate
  • ANT: skinflint, tightward
  • When doing a group project the people that do nothing are wastrel.
