HOW IT WORKS

• It works by filtering your blood with a piece of plastic
• Bigger cells like red blood cells the body needs stay behind while smaller ones like toxins pass through
• Then the toxins go into a tube and into the dialysis machine where they are disposed

WHEN IT STARTED

• The first dialysis was performed in 1943
• It was performed by Dr. Willem Kolff
• Within 2 years it treated 16 patients

NOW ADAYS

• In 2009 there were 398,861 people on dialysis
• In 2012 it was 430,000 people getting dialysis
