PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CHESAPEAKE BAY

BY DANIEL CROCKER

THERE ARE MANY PROBLEMS THAT POLLUTES

  • The four I picked are:
  • Air Pollution
  • Blue Crabs
  • Oysters
  • Stormwater Runoff

AIR POLLUTION

  • Air pollution comes from several sources.
  • Pollution is released in the air we breathe.
  • Nitrogen and chemical contaminants are two pollutants that harm both air and water.
  • The process through which air pollution settles onto land or water is called atmospheric deposition.

AIR POLLUTION

  • Atmospheric deposition occurs in several stages.
  • First, pollution is emitted into the air, where wind and weather can carry it over long distances.
  • Airborne pollution particles fall onto the land or into the water, sometimes in the form of dry particles
  • and sometimes attached to rain, snow or other precipitation.
  • Even pollution that falls onto the land—rather than straight onto the water’s surface and goes into rivers and streams.

BLUE CRABS

  • They are aggressive bottom dwelling predators.
  • The blue crab population is vulnerable to increased harvest pressure, as well as the effects of habitat loss due to poor water quality
  • The main affect of the blue crabs we harvest to many so not all thing are taken care of that they normally do.

OYSTERS

  • The interaction of over-harvesting, disease, sedimentation and poor water quality has since caused a
  • severe decline in their numbers throughout the Chesapeake.
  • Oysters are important to the bay because the filter water, and provide habitats and food.
  • We are also harvesting to many oysters too.
  • Without them the water may not be filter properly and other animals may die.

STORMWATER RUNOFF

  • Any precipitation in an urban or suburban area that does not evaporate or soak into the ground,
  • but instead pools and travels downhill, is considered stormwater.
  • Stormwater from urban and suburban areas contributes a significant amount of pollutants to the Bay.
  • 17 percent of phosphorus, 11 percent of nitrogen and 9 percent of sediment loads to the Bay come from stormwater.

CONCLUSION

  • I think all of the things on the website should be taken care of.
  • The four I listed were air pollution, blue crabs, oysters, and stormwater runoff.
