PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Born in Mobile, Alabama on May 29, 1984(age 30)
Laverne Cox is an Actress and is well known for playing the role of Sophia in Orange Is The New Black. She has a twin Brother who goes by M Lamar
And she is also a transgender
The reason Laverne Cox is one of the most influential people is because she is an inspiration to kids who are struggling with who they are. Laverne knows the struggles of being a Transgender kid. She knows what it feels like to get picked on and bullied. She knows what it feels like to not have support from her loved ones so she hopes to be an inspiration to all the children out there who feel like its not worth it. Shes's an example to the kids who feel like giving up; shes the image of what their future can be like if they hold on.
One of the main reasons why Cox was selected for Time 100 was because she fought agaisn't what she believed was wrong. She knew what it felt like to be discriminated for being a transgender so she decided to take action and defend the rights of her people as well. Cox joined a campaign against a Phoenix, Arizona law which allows police to arrest anyone suspected of "manifesting prostitution", and which she feels targets transgender women of color.
Another reason would be that she became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the acting category, and the first to be nominated for an Emmy Award. She caused such a change in a conservative community that she became the first ever nominated
for a Primetime Emmy.
Laverne sets herself apart from everyone else because she can relate to the kids she's helping. Many people help and fight for causes that they haven't had any first hand expirences with. Laverne understands the people she is helping on a deeper level. She knows what they feel and see everyday.
The reason I decided to do my presentation on Laveren cox is because she is the image of what everyone should be like. She went through some tough times as a kid, but she kept fighting and now she is one of the most respected women in our society. She not only helps the younger generation understand themselves, but she also teaches woman to love themselves.
