MACROMOLECULES

PROTEINS

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

  • Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sometimes sulfur.

FUNCTION

  • Considered a macronutrient, your body needs it in large amounts every day to function.
  • When consumed, the body breaks it down into energy.
  • Hair, and fingernails are also proteins, called characin.

CARBOHYDRATE

  • any of various neutral compounds of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
  • Such as sugars, starches, and celluloses.
  • Monosaccharide is one sugar unit. Examples: glucose, deoxyribose, ribose, fructose, and galactose.
  • Disaccharide is two sugar units. Examples: sucrose, lactose, and maltose
  • Polysaccharide is many sugar units. Examples: starch, glycogen, and cellulose.

FUNCTION

  • Providing energy and regulation of blood glucose.
  • Sparing the use of proteins for energy.
  • Breakdown of fatty acids.
  • Short term energy storage.

LIPID

  • include fats, waxes, phosphatides, cerebrosides, and related compounds.
  • any of various substances that are soluble in nonpolar organic solvents
  • Lipids are soluble in hydrophobic solution.
  • Stores the most energy.
  • Fats, oils, steroids, waxes, phospholipids, and triglycerides.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

  • Hydrogen
  • Carbon
  • Oxygen

FUNCTION

  • Things from providing energy to producing hormones.
  • digest and absorb food.
  • insulate and protect your body.
  • Cell Wall Structure.
