ALCOHOL

DECISION MAKING

Judgement:
-alcohol affects communication and reasoning, so teens use it as an excuse to be more social.
-drinking alcohol might make you feel invincible. You might do something daring or dangerous.
-alcohol affects your coordination and response time

Emotions:
-if you drink you are more likely to become violent, and to commit physical abuse or murder.
-you will also have heightened emotions (ex. Depressed, desperate, jealous, angry, etc.)
-many teen suicide attempts involve alcohol or drugs.

AFTER EFFECTS

  • Hangover (headache, increased sensitivity, nausea, etc.)
  • Blackouts (period in which person can't remember what happened)

VIOLENCE & ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR

Violence:
-people who drink often have little regard for the feelings and safety of others.
-many actions of domestic violence occur after a family member has been drinking alcohol.
-drinking can intensify feelings of sadness, leading to suicide.
-drinking alcohol is risk factor for rape.
-rape is when you force someone without their consent.

Law Breaking:
-in all states people must be 21 yrs. or over to purchase or possess alcohol.
-teens who drink alcohol during school hrs. are breaking school policy leading to expulsion.
-people who drink and drive may injure or kill themselves, or other people

ALCOHOLISM

Behavior:
-people with alcoholism have difficulty controlling their drinking.
-they often feel overwhelmed by the desire for another drink.
-people with alcoholism continue to drink even though it's causing many problems (ex. Denial)
-people deny there is a connection between their problems and alcohol.

Getting Help:
-usually involves long stays at a recovery facility.
-may involve a recovery program (ex. Alcoholics Anonymous)
-Alateen is a recovery program for teens with family members with alcoholism.

HOW YOU KNOW YOU'RE AT RISK

  • Psychiatric disorder
  • Self-esteem
  • Social factors

ALCOHOL ADVERTISING

-disposable income: Young people see thousands of alcohol advertisements before their 16th birthday.
-loyalty: many advertisers want to develop brand loyalty with young people.
-timing of ads: young people can be influenced by TV ads based on the time they come on.
-neighborhoods: alcohol companies spend a great deal of money on billboard advertising.
-Internet: another area where alcohol appears (ex. Websites)
-attractive people: alcohol ads show attractive people drinking & having fun.
