The movie did a good job of portraying the life it's struggling a farmer especially at the Church scene when Gabriel tries to get more men to join the cause.
The colonists truly were farmers with pitchforks that were defending all the property they owned and everything they lived for.
The movie may have over reacted a bit and dramatized some parts with Mel Gibson (being the stud he is) but the overall image was correct.
The overall image was how the colonists overcame the massive British Army.
