  • Congestive heart failure is a chronic progressive condition in
  • Which the heart becomes unable to pump enough blood
  • To meet the needs of the body

SYSTOLIC HEART FAILURE

  • Weakens the wall of the ventricles so they pump less forcefully
  • Heart muscle stretches to create larger chambers in the ventricles
  • Over time the heart wall thickens,chambers narrow,and the heart pumps out less blood
  • Most common type of heart failure

DIASTOLIC HEART FAILURE

  • The heart is not weakened, but becomes stiff after each contraction
  • Does not relax enough to fill completely.
  • With less blood In the ventricle,the amount of blood pumped is decreased.
  • Common in people over 75 years old

SYMPTOMS

  • Shortness of breath,edema in legs and feet
  • Fast irregular heartbeat, ascites
  • Persistent cough with white or pink blood tinged phlegm
  • Sudden weight gain from fluid retention
  • Fatigue,weakness,dizziness

TREATMENT

  • Eating a heart healthy diet,reducing sodium, no smoking or alcohol
  • ACE inhibitors,beta blockers,and diuretics.
  • Exercise and keep appointments with your physician
  • Treatment does not cure CHF, but it can slow it progression,extend life,
  • And to some degree improve symptoms.
