1080

Yellow/Black/Red Hat Thinking

Black Hat Thinking

  • Once there is an aerial drop there is no way to control where the 1080 goes.
  • There is no antidote for 1080 poison.
  • 1080 kills a number of unintended targets like: dogs, cats, deer, pigs, birds, hedgehogs, bees and other insects.
  • 1080 is a toxin to all that breathe air.
  • Animals and birds can suffer for hours or days before dying.

Yellow Hat Thinking

  • 1080 does not kill fish.
  • 1080 has a extremely low risk to harm humans.
  • 1080 has never been found in drinking water.
  • The Kea nesting success rate increased from 51% to 100% in 2011 since 1080 was used in the area.
  • Many native trees and plant species show significantly better growth because the possums have been destroyed.
  • The Kokako population grew by 700% after 1080 was used.

Red Hat Thinking

  • I think that 1080 is bad and shouldn't be used. It kills non-target animals and if it gets into human water source there is no antidote to cure the victim. It makes animals suffer for hours or days before dying. 1080 can cause secondary poisoning, therefore the amount of poisoning is doubled, killing unintended animals.
