During the first two years of the war, the Confederacy won many battles in the east. These victories kept the union army from capturing the confederate capital at Richmond, Virginia. In 1863, Robert e. Lee decided that a confederate victory in the north might convince the union to ask for peace. On July 1, a group of confederate soldiers entered the town of Gettysburg, looking for a supply of shoes. To their surprise, union soldiers were also there. When fighting started to happen both groups headed towards Gettysburg.
Medical care during the civil war was very bad. More than 200,000 men died from injuries they got in war, twice as many died from diseases. Civil war doctors had not much knowledge to cure many of the sick and wounded soldiers. They had little understanding of what caused the infections. They worked in dirty tents, rarely washed their hands or medical instruments so infections would spread to one person to another. Only a swallow of whiskey would ease the pain. Civil war surgeons used bone saws, bullet probe, splints.
Poor food may have caused some of the soldiers health. Soldiers had to carry food that would not spoil. Others usually would eat beef and pork that was pickled (preserved). Soldiers also carried coffee beans, sometimes fruit and others.
