The odds of being struck

  • The odds of being struck in the U.S. is 1 in 700,00
  • The odds of being struck in your life time is 1 in 3,000
  • Also its more likely for males to get struck by lightning.

Volts and temperature:

  • Lightning can raise the temperature in the air around it to 50,000 degrees
  • lightning bolts can contain a hundred million electrical volts
  • About 100 strikes of lightning strike Earth's surface every second 

Killings from lightning:

  • About 2,000 people are killed by lightning a year
  • 9 out of 10 people survive a lightning strike
