Elephants

Two Main Types

  • There are two main types of elephants
  • -The African Elephant 
  • -The Asian Elephant
  • Sometimes the African Elephant is split up
  • - The African Bush and the Forest African Elephant

Elephant facts

  • Elephants are the largest land Mammals
  • Elephants are herbivores 
  • Female elephants are called cows
  • Have no natural predators
  • -Lions & tigers may go after injured, weak or elephant calves

Tusks

Almost all elephants have tusks

Elephant's tusks

  • All African Elephants have tusks
  • Only female Asian Elephants do not
  • Elephant's tusks are made from ivory
  • Many elephants are killed for their tusks

Use of their tusks

  • Digging for ground water
  • Used to lift heavy objects
  • Defense

Fun fact:

Many elephants prefer one tusk over the other, like humans and their hands

Elephant trunks

An elephant's trunk has over 40,000 muscles in it

Elephant trunks

  • An elephant will wave it's trunk in the air to help them breathe better
  • They use their trunk to lift up food and water into their mouths
  • An elephant's trunk can sense the shape, size, and temp. of the object it 
  • -will be picking up
  • An elephant's trunk can grow up to 2 meter long and weigh 140 kg!

Fun fact:

An elephant's eye sight is poor, but their sense of smell is very strong!

Herds

Many elephants that travel in herds are young

Elephant herds

  • Females like to travel in herds
  • Male elephants leave their herds at age 13
  • While in their herds, elephants reproduce
  • A female elephant can start to have calves at age 12
  • -Can be pregnant up to 22 months

Communication

  • Elephants communicate by purring like a cat
  • They can also make loud noises with their trunks

Elephants listen to other elephant's purrs through the vibrations in the ground that come from other elephants.

Soft padding

  • Elephant's feet have a soft padding
  • This makes their walking silent
  • Helps them from slipping
  • Helps hold up their weight

Baby elephants

At birth, an elephant calf can weigh 230 pounds!

An Elephant can live up to be 70 years old on average.

Some people believe elephants are too big to swim, but they can swim! They swim under water.

However, elephants are the only mammals that can not jump.

On average, an elephant’s brain is 3-4 times larger than a human’s brain.

Elephants have skin that’s an inch thick.

Just one of an elephant's molars can weigh up to five pounds!

An adult elephant must drink around 210 liters of water a day.

On average, and elephants heart weighs about 27-46 pounds!

Elephants can cry, laugh, play, and even have memories.

The largest elephant in the world was an adult male African elephant and he weighed about 24,000lbs and was 13 feet tall at the shoulder.

The blood in elephant’s ears controls the temperature of their body. On hot days the blood in their ears can cool them down.
