Nelson Mandela

Life Events

  • Nelson Mandela was born July 18, 1918in Transkei
  • In 1944 he married Evelyn Mase
  • He attended University College of Fort Hare and University of Witwatersrand
  • He finished his BA at The University of South Africa
  • He created the first black law firm in South Africa in 1952

Politics

  • In 1943 he joined the African National Congress (ANC)
  • In 1944 he formed the ANC Youth League
  • As he moved up through the ANC he actively took part in the struggle agains apartheid
  • In 1956 Mandela along with many others was arrested and charged with treason creating the Treason Trial

  • In 1963 Mandela was arrested for leaving the country without a permit
  • Also in 1963 he and others were put on trial for sabbotage
  • In 1964 he and 7 others faced the death penatly bubt were sentenced life in prison
  • He was released from prison in 1990

  • In 1993 he and President FW de Klerk were seleceted for the Nobel Peace Prize
  • He voted for the first time in 1994
  • In 1994 he was South Africa's first democratically elected President

  • In 1999 he stepped down as president keeping true to his promise he would do one term
