rain

• drops of water are called rain
• water evaporates from every water surface on earth
• and eventually falls back down to the surface
• you can measure rain with a rain gauge
• its 0.5-5 mm

sleet

• when raindrops fall through a layer of air below 0 degrees
• as they fall the raindrops freeze into solid particles of ice
• ice particles smaller than 5 mm in diameter are sleet
• a hail is bigger than sleet

freezing rain

• when raindrops fall as liquid water but freeze
• and they touch a cold surface it turns into freezing rain
• when you look at it you see ice
• the size is always different

snow

• snowflakes have an endless number of shaped and patterns
• they form when watervapor in a cloud is converted directly into ice crystals
• snowflakes often join together into large clumps of snow
• snow is measured by using a simple measuring stick or by melting collected snow
• and then measuring the depth of water it produces

HAIL

• its a round pellet of ice larger than 5mm in diameter
• forms inside of cumulonimbus clouds during thunderstorms
• hail can cause damage to to crops, buildings, vehicles
• if you cut it in half you can see layers just like an onion
• hail is bigger than all the other precipitation
