FAST FACTS

  • Born: Nottinghamshire, England
  • Education: Oxford University
  • Died: October 30, 1823

CARTWRIGHT'S INSPIRATION

  • 1784- Visited Richard Arkwright's spinning mill
  • Inspired to construct a similar loom for weaving

HIS FIRST LOOM

  • Clumsy and ineffective
  • Barely functioned

NEW LOOM BRINGS SUCCESS

  • 1786- began opening factories for his looms
  • 1790- created a mechanical loom able to weave wide cloth

BANKRUPTCY

  • 1791- Factory burnt down
  • 1793- Forced to sell factory and patents.

LATER LIFE

  • 1796- moved to London
  • Worked on other invention ideas
  • Died on October 30, 1823
