PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MOUNTAIN GOAT

COMPETITION

  • Competition is very rare with mountain goats.
  • But when they do fight, it is very fatal.
  • While fighting, the mountain goats each try to impale the other with their horns.
  • Other signs of competition are arching backs and running toward the threat.
  • These rarely end in injury.

Territory:
They are some of the only animals up that high, and they spend their day hunting and walking around in their herds or by themselves (in the males case)
They do not mark their territory, but while the females are giving birth, they claim an area for that time.

MATING AND RAISING YOUNG

  • Billies (males) will follow the females around for about a month.
  • After the kid is born, the female shows them all they need to know.
  • When the kid reaches one year, they will go off on their own.
  • Although many kids do survive past their first few years on their own,
  • some die because of mis-footing, predators, and lack of food.

LIVING IN GROUPS?

  • Female mountain goats live in herds of 10.
  • Males are solitary animals, only coming in mating season.
  • When it is mating season, the males are in charge. Otherwise,
  • it is a female in charge.
  • Of course, due to the solitation of the males, fighting is rare.

Mountain goats "migrate" in the winter months. They don't move very far. Usually they move lower to get to warmer temperatures. After the winter, the goats move back to where they were before.

Communication:
The one way mountain goats communicate is by bleating. This helps the males during mating season. It is also used when females are hunting.

QUICK LEARNERS?

  • They do learn quickly. Kids learn what to eat
  • and where to step. One small mistake could be the difference
  • between life and death. Kids also learn how to become aggressive
  • hunters. Without learning this information within the course of 1
  • year, their life would not last long.

RANDOM FACTS

  • The goats have a thick white coat to protect them from the biting
  • winds. In the summer, they shed this coat.
  • Kids must be on their feet within minutes of birth.
  • Introduced by the Olympic Peninsula in the 1920's
