HISTORY

  • Founded by Stephen F. Austin
  • Founded as Waterloo
  • In 1839 due to growth in population, renamed and became state capital
  • Building boom in the 1850's
  • First Capitol building built in 1853

HISTORY

  • 2nd building boom in 1870's
  • Arrival of railroad in 1870's
  • University of Texas at Austin founded in 1883
  • Current capital completed in 1888

AUSTIN MUSEUM OF ART AT LAGUNA GLORIA

  • 12 acre grounds
  • Lots of sculptures and gardens
  • There is an admission charge

SFA MAST ARBORETUM

  • 10 acre garden
  • Located at SFA state university
  • Began in 1985
  • Started as a project for a class
  • One of the most diverse collection of plants
