PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THREE LITTLE PIGS

A 4th Grade Literature & STEM lesson

Instructional Design: Pedagogy

Project Based Learning/Constructivism
Begin with the Pedagogy:
Effective Teaching begins with effective research based practices

MakerSpace- Invent to Learn
4 C's, mastery of content, big ideas

Best Practice Considerations

  • Backwards Design
  • UDL
  • Differentiation
  • Inquiry Based Learning
  • Scaffolding (modeling, guided & individual practice)

Content

  • Engineering Design Process?
  • Design a solution to a problem?
  • Strategies a writer uses for different audiences?
  • How do folktales provide insight and teach us lessons?
What is Engineering Design Process?
How can you design a solution to a problem?
What strategies does a write use to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes?
How do folktales
provide insight into other cultures
and teach us lessons for our daily lives

Context

1:1 Chromebooks but adaptable
Consider the constraints of tech, learning space, student needs
(ex: Creation tool with 30 kids using microphones)

Technology

tool used to Collaborate, Publish & Share, Engage and create

QuickFire

  • Think about what you know about Point of View
  • Write a description:
  • From the point of view of the crayon mother
  • From the point of view of the blue crayon
  • From the point of view of the red crayon
Post to a Padlet or Edmodo:

Pair Share & Talk about similarities and differences in their descriptions

Share & Discuss

Reason for tech:
Engaging Hook
Activates Prior Knowledge
Published Creation (Support Material posted on website)
Student Choice
Collaboration

The Three Little Pigs

Student Retelling
Introduce objective:
How do authors use point of view to tell a story?

Students are familiar with the traditional Three Little Pigs text.

Think Pair and Share of Story Retelling

Share out

Activating Prior Knowledge- No Tech

Read aloud

The true story of the three little pigs
Research supports read alouds and modeling with text so technology does not add anything unless we are using it as a tool to help make the text accessible.

Comprehension Questions

Goal is not focused on reading comprehension

Compare/Contrast

The true story vs. The traditional
Create a Venn Diagram with student input about True Story vs. the traditional

Could use tech but not necessary

Anchor Chart- tech tool is paper and markers
Define 1st person point of view and 3rd person point of view.

Go back to the text and identify specific examples of 1st and 3rd person point of view.

Independent Practice

Rewrite your quickfire to be from the opposite point of view
Students would return to their original quickfire activity and rewrite using third person if they wrote in first person or first person if they wrote in third person.

Submit via Edmodo

Tying prior knowledge and new knowledge together.

Application of new skills.

Blogging:
Common Core (publish & share)
Motivation: Ownership & publishing, writing for a purpose

Collaboration & Communication

STem

Problem: how can you design a structure that will withstand strong winds?

Need to Know

  • Engineering Design Process/What is an Engineer
  • Geometry/ Architecturally Strong Shapes
  • Wind Speed/Wind Resistance

Think & Plan

Collaborative, Google Draw
Engineering Design Process:
Assign Groups

Think:
Research with guiding questions
Turn in research through Google Docs before moving onto planning stage

Plan:
Collaborative create a prototype on Google Draw supporting your design. Turn in and then you can Create.

Create & Improve

Making, Creating, reflecting, improving
Create:

Students will create their houses based off their design. They will use given supplies.

Improve:

They will have one test run with the "Big Bad Hairdryer" and can make changes before final structure is tested.

Publish Results
Write a Reflection:
You are the house. Talk about why someone should purchase you using your creation process to support your writing.
