PLOT

  • Jimmy Cross, Kiowa, and Henry Dobbins set up camp at a Buddhist Pagoda.
  • The monks acted kindly towards them reguardless that their homes are being taken over.
  • Slowly, the men saw the humanity left in Vietnam.
  • Kiowa and Henry Dobbins talked about their religious connections and how they changed their prospective on life
  • Henry and Kiowa determined that the Pogada is a place of peasce and should not be disturbed by war.

THEMES

  • Irony: The monks clean a machine gun
  • Monks are people of peace yet they are cleaning an item that often disturbs the peace
  • There's always good left in humanity when all seems to be gone
  • Kiowa and Henry Dobbins realized the mistake they made in setting up camp at a place of peace

CHARACTERS

  • Jimmy Cross: the monks seemed to favorite him, however he had no emotional connection
  • Henry Dobbins: Wanted to be a minister, felt guilty for disturbing the monks, had the biggest connection with the monks
  • Kiowa: went to church as a kid, also felt guilty disturbing the monks, enjoys being around churches and religion
  • Monks: lived within the pagodas, made connections to Henry Dobbins and Kiowa, respected the men even though their peace was disturbed
