WHY DID TERRORISTS ATTACK THE WORLD TRADE CENTER And THE PENTAGON?

  • Al-Qaeda hoped that, by attacking these symbols of American power, they would promote widespread fear throughout the country and weaken the United States

WHAT WAS THE US LIKE BEFORE AND LEADING UP TO 9/11?

  • the public sensed that the peace and prosperity of the 1990s were coming to an end.
  • A growing minority of Americans (29%) said the media is not providing enough coverage of foreign news

HOW DID THE ATTACK ACTUALLY GO?

  • The hijacked Flight 11 was crashed into floors 93 to 99 of the North Tower at 8:46 a.m. The hijacked Flight 175 struck floors 77 to 85 of the South Tower 17 minutes later at 9:03 a.m.
  • The collapse of the buildings left the site devastated, with ruins towering roughly 17 stories and spread beyond the 16-acre site.

WHAT HAS CHANGED IN THE US SINCE 9/11?

  • The US is less dependent on foreign fuels
  • Not until June 2002 did the air quality near the site return to the level it was at prior to the attacks.

THE FACTS

  • Thousands of volunteers came to Ground Zero to help with the rescue, recovery and clean-up efforts, and on May 30, 2002, the last piece of WTC steel was ceremonially removed.
  • September 11, 2001, was the deadliest day in history for New York City firefighters: 343 were killed. -
