THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND WORLD WAR 11 1929 TO 1949

THE PRESIDENT DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION

  • Before President Franklin Roosevelt was President Herbert Hoover
  • Before he became unpopular he had served as food administrator during World War l
  • He also had been in charge of the American Relief Commission
  • And when the stock market crashed in 1929,
  • Hoover believe the best thing to do was allow it to right itself

In the year 1933, about 15 million people were out of work and had to migrate to the countryside in search of work

SCHOOLING

  • By 1933, about 200,000 teachers were out of work
  • 2.2 million children had dropped out of school
  • At least 2,000 rural schools never reopened
  • Schools that stayed opened: shortened the school day,
  • And the school year to save operating cost, and slashing teachers salaries (lucky to get 40$week)

In 1947, He was the first African American to play in the major baseball leagues on the Brooklyn Dodgers

1930-1940

  • Industry were Tommy Dorsey
  • And Glenn Miller

1943 government poster urged women to try new kinds of work, since most of the men had to go to war. 14 million women in industrial workers and 2 million of them in defense plants

before the Great Depression was a former movie actress. Then when the Great Depression hit she then went to help out as a airplane factory worker.
