ISI, The Islamic State of Iraq was established under Al-Queda leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri in 2006. Also in 2006 Abu Ayyub al-Masri named Abu Omar al-Baghdadi as its leader. In 2013 ISI dissolved from Al-Queda and became what we now know as ISIS or the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant. In February of 2014 Al-Queda officially renounced all ties to this new terror group (CNN, 2005).

Why we need to keep an eye on isis

  • Kidnappings
  • Public Beheadings
  • Public Executions
  • Individiauls are leaving their homes every day to join them
(Karl, 2014). Photo

ISIS is also affecting our citizens and our government by inflicting fear through their actions. As we see in the news almost daily they take their actions to the extreme. Through public executions, beheadings, and kidnappings. These images and news articles then spread rapidly through the use of social media. Affecting more citizens quicker than ever. “The harrowing images of Americans with knives to their throats has given the threat from ISIS an emotional resonance and stoked calls on Capitol Hill and elsewhere for President Obama to act more boldly. Prior to the videos of violent be-headings of American journalists, support for more involvement in the Middle East was low. However, after the be-headings, the news — the images — penetrated the dense, complex U.S. media sphere with 94 percent of Americans stating they were following media coverage of the executions. Public opinion began to change, with now 61 percent of Americans who think military action against ISIS in Syria is “in the national interest” (Brown & Bruer, 2015).

Social Media and ISis

  • Recruitment
  • Threats
  • Communication with members across the globe
(Logan, 2015). - Photo

Social media has become an issue with the recruitment and with individuals showing support towards this organization. Social media has made it easier to recruit these individuals and get them information; furthermore, we have to decide how serious to take support of ISIS by American citizens on social media. Christopher Cornell, an Ohio man, was arrested for things he had posted on social media that suggested he was plotting an attack (Brown & Bruer, 2015).

More than ever before our youth is being targeted through social media by ISIS

We are also seeing a high recruitment effort for women to join ISIS, so no one is below their radar. Michael Steinbach the head of the terrorist division of the FBI stated the following: "We've seen lots of places, online media, forums, social media, where there have been calls to conducting lone wolf attacks in your home country through a variety of means, not necessarily a sophisticated technique, but use what you have, use the tools you have and conduct an attack” (Brown & Bruer, 2015).

What do they want?

(Cambanis, 2014)- Photo

What do they want?

  • They have attempted to gain control of locations in Iraq and Syira
  • They use violence to achieve their objectives
  • They believe strongly in the Islamic state and its goals
(Cambanis, 2014)- Photo

ISIS believes in the Islamic State and is fighting for it. While some believe it is for religious reasons, because they believe strongly in the Islamic way of life, some believe it is simply for power. All we know for sure is the leader of ISIS is using terrorist actions to achieve his goals, and he is so ruthless, that Al-Queda the group responsible for bombing the twin towers, does not even want to be associated with them.

Who have we caught?

  • Sympathyzers
  • Followers
We have not caught any big members of the group ISIS considering they are relatively new to the terrorist world. Most often we have seen sympathizers or followers of the group caught and brought to justice. For example, “A Virginia woman who allegedly offered to help someone join the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, faces federal charges of making a false statement regarding an offense involving terrorism. Heather Elizabeth Coffman, 29, of Henrico County, VA., is accused of lying about offering to help an online contact who was actually an undercover FBI agent connect with the terrorist group in Syria” (The Southern Poverty Law Center, 2015, p. 11).
