Write down the areas of the AS Media exam that you find the easiest and the most challenging. This could include whole sections, or specific elements such as, essay structure, timing, analysis, applying case studies.

Annotate the images

  • Who is being represented?
  • What media language is being used?
  • What is being communicated about the characters?
  • Who does the image appeal to/connect with?
  • Are the representations stereotypical?
Choose some still images from British TV Drama texts and annotate them using these questions as a starting point. Analyse the images in as much depth as possible.

Analysis

  • Camera shots, angles, movement, compostition
  • Editing
  • Sound
  • Mise en scene
  • How do these areas link back to representation?
Analyse how these four media areas construct the representation of class and status in the clip. You could split your page into the four areas and write the techniques used under each heading.

REMEMBER - You MUST link back to the area of representation at all times. When writing a technique down, always write next to it how it represents class and status (for this example). Other areas of representation may include -

Gender
Age
Ethnicity
Sexuality
Physical ability/disability
Regional identity

  • State the types of representations that are present
  • Stereotypes? Alternative? Juxtaposed?
