PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Student-Centered Coaching
Student-Centered Coaching is about...
- Knowing where our students are as learners
- Knowing where they need to be in relation to the standards
- Working with teachers to close the gap
Lesson #1: An outcomes-based approach to coaching is supported by the research.
Formative assessment is defined as "frequent, interactive assessments of students' progress and understanding to identify learning needs and adjust teaching appropriately." (Looney, 2005)
Lesson #2: Coaching is ongoing.
We use 4-6 week long coaching cycles.
Lesson #3: It doesn't work to 'fix' teachers.
We help teachers set standards-based goals for coaching cycles.
Lesson #4: We have to understand what the students should know and be able to do.
We unpack the standards into student-friendly learning targets.
Lesson #5: Coaching is a partnership.
We use student evidence to co-plan and co-deliver instruction.
Lesson #6: Leadership is essential.
“The more that pressure and support become seamless, the more effective the change process will be at getting things to happen.”
(Fullan, 2009)
Lesson #7: We must understand how we impact teaching and learning.
We use the Results-Based Coaching Tool.
"Coaching is deliberate actions to help the adults to get the results from the students - often by helping teachers to interpret evidence about the effect of their actions, and providing them with choice to more effectively gain these effects."
(Hattie, 2012)
