What is it ?

  • Gnarled, enlarged veins mostly in the hands and feet.
  • Usually bent due to enlargement and constriction.
  • Very close to surface of skin
Gnarled, enlarged veins mostly in the hands and feet. It can occur in other parts of the body but it isn't likely. The varicose veins are usually bent due to enlargement in the actual veins and constriction from the skin. They are very close to the surface of skin meaning that they stick out.

Causes of Varicose veins

  • Isn't entirely understood
  • Absence or weakness of valves in veins causes poor circulation
  • Weakness in the walls may cause pooling of the blood and blood volume to decrease.
  • phlebitis ( inflammation of veins)
  • blood clots
  • Congenital Abnormalities -

Symptoms

  • Usually Self Diagnosable
  • Usually there are no symptoms
  • Can be painful
  • Mostly a cosmetic Concern
  • Discomfort
  • Could be a underlying circulatory problem

Factors

  • Heredity
  • Prolonged Standing
  • Excess weight (primary)
  • These conditions can evolve and cause edema, skin pigmentation,eczema, and in worst cases leg ulceration. (secondary)

Statistics

  • 40 million Americans have varicose veins
  • Varicose Veins affect 1 out 2 people 50 and Older
  • 15% of men have visable varicose veins
  • 25% of women have visible varicose veins.

Treatments

  • Compression Stocking
  • Exercise
  • Procedures to close or remove veins.

what is it

  • PVD- is a disorder that affect any blood vessel outside of the heart and brain

2 types

  • Functional-doesn't involve physical problems
  • Organic- involve changes in the blood vessel structure

Arteriosclerosis

  • where plaque builds up inside a vessel
  • usually case hardening of the arteries

Atheriosclerosis

  • build-up fatty material(fats and cholesterol) within the vessel
  • which often block and narrow vessel

cause

  • emotional stress, smoking, cold temperature, operating vibrating machinery

Symptom

  • painful cramping, achiness, fatigue, burning

Statistics

  • 12-20% of people age over 65
  • about 8 million people in the US

Treatment

  • stop smoking, commit to a regular exercise program, eat a balance diet ,lost weight
