• 6 million Hispanic children are in poverty, 2/3 are from immigrant parents.
• Had a lot of racial dicrimination when he was in U.S. high school

Journey to America

• Moved when he was 17, his parents didn't come with him
• Didn't know any English or anything about America
• Came by plane

Accomplishments

• First Hispanic-American astronaut
• 7 NASA medals
• Been in space for more than 1,600 hours, completed 7 missions in space
• Has been to space seven times, tied with Jerry Ross
