The Three Branches:

  • Legislative Branch- Make Laws
  • Executive Branch- Carry Out Laws
  • Judicial Branch- Evaluate Laws 

Legislative Branch:

  • In charge of making the laws
  • Composed of the Senate & House of Representatives
  • Senate: 100 elected Senators/ 2 per state
  • House of Representatives: 435 elected representatives
  • Representatives are based on each states population

Executive Branch:

  • Composed of the President, Vice President and Cabinet Members 
  • President: head of state, head of U.S. Government
  • Vice President: supports President, presiding officer of Senate
  • Cabinet Members: nominated by President, approved by Senate
  • Cabinet Members advise and head various departments

The President:

  • Makes laws official 
  • Serves a 4 year term, but no more than 8 years
  • Approves and carries out laws by Legislative Branch
  • Serves as Commander in Chief for Armed Forces

Some Cabinet Departments:

  • Secretary of State
  • Secretary of Treasure, Transportation, 
  • Secretary of Defense, Education, Energy
  • Justice Department
  • Secretary of Agriculture, Commerce, Labor

Judicial Branch:

  • Composed of the Court Systems
  • Supreme Court: 9 Justices 
  • Justices are nominated by President, approved by Senate
  • Other Federal Courts (U.S. Court of Appeals, District Courts)
