mana island is an island

off the south west coast of the north island

shipwrecks were caused due to the confusion

between the this lighthouse and pencarrow light house

the Maori name is Te mana o kupe

it is three km long

on Mana island there is different types of animals

such as Takahe there are 60 on the island

the Vella started farming sheep

in the 1830s but however in 1854 all the sheep had to be killed 

there are 8 kiwis on the island

brought there by DOC 

in the 1820 the ngati toa iwi

led by Te Rauparaha established bases on the island 

there are also Whitaker's skink

that are only found in Mana island and pukerua bay
